If your small business isn’t already listed on review site Yelp!, there’s a new reason to get listed. Following the recent update of Apple’s iPhone operating system to iOS6, the “Map” app is now powered by Yelp!—not by Google.
While most of the attention to this has focused on glitches in the app, for small business owners, the change spells opportunity. Simply optimize your Yelp! listing, making sure your address and contact information is accurate. Then add details about your business, photos, maps/directions, menus or whatever is relevant to your business. Most important, be sure to put your business in the correct categories—whether that’s “Plumbing,” “Restaurant” or whatever’s appropriate. Users can now access all that data without leaving the Map app—and the more detail you add, the higher your business will appear in the results when an iPhone user searches for businesses like yours.
