Workers' Compensation Insurance is compulsory in DC if an employer has one or more employees. An employer is also entitled to apply for self-insurance, but must be approved by the Department of Employment Services (DOES) office.

  • Homeowners are required to have Workers' Compensation insurance for domestic workers if they work at least 240 hours during any calendar quarter in the same or previous year.
  • Workers' Compensation must be procured through a private insurance company, unless the employer receives state approval for self-insurance.
